Hey fam – John Cody here! Printful is probably the most well known POD app in existence. They have been around for a while, and they have four fulfillment centers (2 in the USA – 1 in Mexico – 1 in Latvia). They offer a wide arrange of mostly apparel based products, but what they do most, they do well.
Printful isn’t known for just one product, there are so many in their arsenal. My favorite though, are the embroidered Snap Backs
These aren’t unique, but they are one of the only companies who can pull it off and produce a top quality product.
On PODninjas.com when we review print on demand apps we look at 4 key categories which we discuss at length.
- Ease of use
- Product Selections/Uniqueness
- Customer Support
- Seller Resources
We do not designate any rating however we provide ample information for you to make your own assumption about the app.
We also do not review pricing, shipping or quality with these types of reviews. That’s because those things differ from product to product. To see reviews like that please check out all of our product reviews here!
Ease Of Use: Printful is a pretty straight forward and simple to use app. They have a great looking dashboard and all of your orders and products are easily accessible.
They were the first to show the breakdown in production/fulfillment/shipping in the dashboard. This can really help you visualize where your customer’s products are within the process. It also will let you know when the product has arrived, most other apps still haven’t been able to do this yet.
Product creation on Printful is rather straight forward. Just pick the product you want to use, and then upload the design you want to show up on the mock up to the right.
Product Selection/Uniqueness: Since Printful has been around longer than most companies in this space, they have grown quite substantially in terms of their product offerings.
They offer a great mix of products and have something for nearly every niche. From Socks to Canvasses. What they do best though, is definitely Apparel.
Customer Support: Printful has one of the best live chat’s in the industry but also are open until 8pm EST for live calls. I like when I can Chat/Call/Email. Having options is always a good thing for a business owner like yourself.
They also have a group that is run by actual members of the Printful team. It isn’t very large with just over 5000 members, but it is rare that a question doesn’t get responded to accordingly.
This seems to be the go to place to get support for small issues such as designs – anything to do with the app or questions as it relates to other business activities that could be relevant to you as well.
Seller Resources: Printful offers a few unique things here that are pretty big. One being Warehousing. With Warehousing & Fulfillment, you can store products sold at your ecommerce store at their warehouse, and they’ll fulfill your orders and ship the products directly to your customers under your own brand.
Second, they do offer some branding options for products and packaging. This usually increases the cost of each item by $1-2, but if brand building is important to your particular business, then is a must in my opinion.
Third, they offer graphic design services! I had a design created by them that would stand out the most using their hat embroidery service. It was roughly $50 US for the entire design, which is not terrible.
Lastly, they have lots of integration’s! One thing that hurts many POD apps is that they only work on Shopify. You will be able to connect with Woocommerce and Square Space, just to name a few. This opens the door to many more small business owners.
Final Verdict: I will be absolutely transparent with you. Printful is at the top of the game but I do have a few issues that prevent this from being my favorite POD app. It is expensive for most of the products as it compares to others in the market. The biggest example I can give is their leggings. Just a basic, simple all over print legging. The base cost + shipping is just over $30. A better quality legging with Subliminator is $22. That $8 can make a huge difference in your bottom line, so when you go through their product offerings, you may also see similar discrepancies like this. So know your products and do you your research to ensure you are making the right decisions.
The other thing that made me switch up a lot of my stores offerings, was when products kept going out of stock. In one month over the summer, I had over 10 items I had to remove from my store because they completely ran out of inventory. I have never had this happen to me with any other POD company. Now, for most of the main items this isn’t a problem, but still, it can be very frustrating dealing with that.
I won’t leave it at that though. They are a very good company. Their support is helpful, their tools are helpful and their product quantity and quality are as good as you can hope for. The integration’s are also something that makes them very powerful. So if you are running WordPress, Square Space or Shopify, this is a POD app you should definitely be giving some attention to.
