1) They picked a bad niche.

The most critical thing with any print on demand item is the niche the item is in. Most times, people who are brand new to this business have trouble finding a good niche to sell in.

The problem isn’t that they aren’t good at understanding what a passionate niche is but it’s that they haven’t gained the experience to know what types of niches people actually will buy merchandise for.

2) Their store isn’t branded or is too generic.

I currently have a paid service for store assessments and I want to share one of the biggest problems I see when I am doing these assessments. First off, when you create a print on demand product you need to delete the description that loads from the print on demand app.

This description is likely something that will turn buyers off. It is too generic. Most times it is three to four lines of basic text describing the material of the item, with one or two sentences about how the item will delight them.

Additionally, most people do not add any brand imagery. When I tell them to, they question what that means. Take a look at popular Shopify stores, or even big apparel brands. You will see that they not only have a logo, but they have great images all over their stores.

Their trust badges, their about us buttons, their footer, even their product images usually have some sort of branding on them.

All of these efforts will make your store seem like a real brand, which is key to making lots of sales.

3) They start a niche store but the niche isn’t good.

Like I said above, most people who start a print on demand store pick poor niches that will never make them any money.

The problem is, these same people are building entire niche specific stores with these niches.

A niche specific store is a store that only has one niche on it. It can have many products, but everything about the store including it’s name, domain, and logo are all niche specific.

This is a problem because they spend a ton of time setting the store up, they invest in a logo, designs and more before they even do any sort of testing with their audience to see if there is interest to buy.

Then what happens is they finally do launch ads, and they flop.

And they give up. Because they spent so much time on the store, and don’t want to repeat the process.

4) They don’t start with a general store.

Like I mentioned in reason #3, people pick bad niches and build niche stores to start.

What you need to be doing is starting a general store to start for the sole purpose of testing niches out.

The end goal should be to start a niche store, and build a brand. But to get there, you have to find the perfect niche!

This can be done through a general store. This general store does not even have to have a menu, or even a homepage.

All you will be doing is driving traffic to the product pages which is why the homepage and the menu doesn’t matter.

The purpose of the store is to test niches, once something is working well and selling – go open yourself a niche store!

5) They go too fast.

Most people start Shopify print on demand and they instantly jump right into everything at once.

Here’s the thing though – most people starting these stores have no business experience, no design experience, and they’ve never marketed a product in their lives.

But yet they want to “build a brand”…

I hear that statement all the time. “But Joe…. I really want to build a brand.”

I don’t even know what that means. First you need to sell something before you can build a brand.

A brand is more than just a product. And right now you don’t even have a product. Slow down, find yourself something you can sell 100 of first, and then focus on branding.
